Facts about Black Mountain
Black Mountain is a Sunshine Coast hinterland locality situated around 30 minutes west of Noosa Heads, at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast region. The area’s recorded history dates back to at least 1913, when the former Black Mountain State School opened. It later closed in 1961.
According to the 2021 Census, Black Mountain had a population of 1,262, a significant increase from just 33 residents recorded in 1921. The locality retains a peaceful, semi-rural character while being within comfortable reach of the coast.
The median house price in Black Mountain is approximately $1,150,000 (2025 data), reflecting demand for acreage properties and hinterland lifestyle homes. Housing stock is a mix of established homes from the mid-20th century and more contemporary builds, with many properties set on larger blocks.
Families will need to travel to neighbouring suburbs for schooling. The closest major centre is Cooroy, about a 10-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket, specialty shops and community facilities. Cooroy also offers sporting associations covering cricket, swimming, tennis, soccer and golf, along with an RSL and a small selection of cafés. Creative and community groups, including writing and woodworking clubs, are also active in the area.
Black Mountain falls within the Noosa Shire Council region and is largely made up of rural residential properties, hobby farms and acreages. Sustainable living and land care are strong themes throughout the community.
For outdoor recreation, Lake Macdonald is only a short drive away. The lake is popular for fishing, including species such as Australian bass and spangled perch. A valid Queensland fishing permit is required.
If you are looking for a town with a more country feel, that is still only a 20-minute drive to the water, Black Mountain may be for you.
