Facts about Chelmer
With much of the suburb bordering the Brisbane River, and less than 10km from Brisbane’s CBD by car, Chelmer is an extremely high-demand market. With options for commuting via car, bus and train the suburb is popular with families and those who work in the city.
While many houses in Chelmer are recently built and fairly new, there are still some examples of the original housing in the areas including those from the 1920’s -1930’s. A four-bedroom house can be purchased for an average of $855,000 while a similar one is also rented for an average of $800 per week. While units aren’t very common, the average rental price for a two-bedroom unit is $335 per week. If you are looking for an investment property in the area, rentals are in high demand with an average of 230 visitors per house. With much of the suburb lining the Brisbane River, it is beneficial to check any flood maps of the area, as in high rainfall or a dam release, some flooding should be expected.
There are a small number of schools in the suburb with two preschools and a high school. There are two primary schools in the adjoining suburb, neither of which is too far out of Chelmer. For sporting options, there are two AFL associations which are located in the suburb, as well as a sailing club. In neighbouring suburbs, there are sporting associations for hockey, netball and rugby union amongst others.
Chelmer is part of the Brisbane City Council area and has access to a large range of public facilities including a library in the nearby suburbs of Corinda and Indooroopilly, swimming pools at Corinda and Yeronga, sports fields, parks and public transport.
One of the more interesting things about Chelmer is the Walter Taylor Bridge that connects the suburb with Indooroopilly across the river. It is a heritage-listed suspension bridge shared by vehicles and pedestrians. It was once inhabited with a small number of apartments in the pylons of the bridge; a ballroom was also discovered in one pylon. Until 2010, the residents were some of the last members of the original toll masters family. Construction was started in 1930, with the bridge finally opened in 1936. Today, the local council run guided tours of the bridge and its facilities.
Chelmer is a great riverside suburb, and despite two main roads running through the area, it is a relatively quiet and peaceful suburb.
