Facts about Carbrook
Carbrook is a semi-rural suburb within the Logan City Council area, located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The suburb borders the Logan River and sits close to the boundary of Redland City Council, giving residents access to both regions.
Carbrook has an interesting history linked to German settlers who moved from nearby Bethania in 1867. The settlement was originally known as Gramzow, named after a village in Prussia where many of the immigrants came from. A church was built the same year along what was known as German Church Road. Today, the Cornubia Lutheran Cemetery remains as a reminder of this early settlement.
During World War I, anti-German sentiment across Australia resulted in the suburb’s name being changed from Gramzow to Carbrook. The local post office was also transferred from its German postmaster to a resident of non-German descent.
Early industries in the area included cotton farming, followed by sugar cane production. Over time, agriculture diversified to include arrowroot, bananas, pineapples, grapes, citrus and tobacco. Other small industries, such as blacksmithing and sawmilling also operated in the district during its early development.
Today, Carbrook still maintains much of its rural character, with many properties sitting on larger blocks of land. In 2025, the median house price in Carbrook is approximately $1,150,000, reflecting the demand for acreage-style living within commuting distance of the city.
