Scarborough is suburb located on the west coast, just a short 15 minute drive west from the heart of Perth city, Western Australia. The coastal suburb was named after the English beach resort “Scarborough” and is believed to have first been used in 1892 by Patrick Callaghan, a Melbourne developer.
Not surprisingly, Scarborough has many attractions boasting more than 2 kilometres of beautiful sandy beach, an attractive esplanade with children’s playgrounds and a walk/bike path. Abbett Park offers a variety of sporting opportunities, including football, squash, lawn bowls, tennis and cricket. The park is often used by the Scarborough Junior Football Club and Western Whalers Football Club for training.
Also known as the Sunset Coast, Scarborough is the perfect beach destination for relaxing and indulging in a range of water sports and activities. The long Scarborough Beach is home to one of Perth’s major surf lifesaving clubs that patrols the city’s popular beaches. During summer, hundreds of bronzed bodies and excited tourists spend hours swimming, surfing, listening to music, reading, playing beach volleyball or just all day sunbathing.
The suburb has two primary schools – Scarborough Primary School and St. John’s Primary School which was included in the 2013 top primary schools in Perth. A library and community recreation centre is also located near the eastern boundary of Scarborough. On a lazy weekend, hire a surfboard or take a lesson from the local surf schools and hit the waves.
Local shopping complexes are scattered throughout the suburb that provide for daily needs. Coles Supermarket, Doric Street Supermarket and IGA are just a short drive or a few minutes walking distance away. The Brighton Food Market during the weekend offers a good range of organic produce and features various stalls from antiques, fashion, surf wear, tarot reading, massage and reflexology, books, rocking horse shop, a licensed food hall and many more.
Scarborough offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs to refuel you after a busy day. The relaxed seaside atmosphere and attractions of the suburb draws people to breakfast and brunch in the delightful alfresco restaurants and cafes. Wild Fig Café offers a 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean and even serves gluten and dairy free dishes. BOHO Espresso is a hip little coffee shop which offers a special blend of Brazilian and Ethiopian beans. You can also opt for all you can eat meat at Boa Brazilian BBQ or go for something simple like tapas from Zanders. Get merry on a Pescatore’s beach cockatil when you visit Café del Pescatore or order the special fried rice at the Fortuna Chinese Restaurant. At night, Scarborough’s foreshore comes alive with pumping bars. Head to Botanica Bar and Bistro for some live music and a buzzing dance floor plus they also have Sunday Seshes.
If you are looking for a special and unique cake for your kid’s birthday, wedding or any special occasion, place your order at Bake-a-boo cakes. Meanwhile Brighton Bakery, an institution in the Doubleview / Scarborough area for years offers a wide range of fantastic pies and pastries. In fact, it has won a number of prizes at several Royal Shows so you better go there early as they often sell out after noontime.
Planning to move soon? Scarborough is sure to offer a smorgasbord of things to see and do for you and your family.
