The Central Brisbane district is comprised by the 17 inner suburbs surrounding the city, including the central business district itself. There’s arguably not a more diverse district in Queensland with regards to the facilities available and the people. From towering skyscrapers to vast sports arenas, lush parks and reserves to upscale shopping strips, Central Brisbane has it all. Even with all the hustle and bustle of the city, however, residential areas are tucked away in serene tree-lined enclaves where residents can separate themselves from the hectic pace and lifestyle of the bustling Queensland metropolis.
As it is home to the CBD, it is to be expected that there are a plethora of options available to residents as to the manner in which they travel around the area and other suburbs further afield. Queen Street and King George Square contain major bus stations that provide bus routes throughout the Greater Brisbane Area. Train services are available via the Central railway station and Roma Street railway station, located on Ann and Roma Street respectively. Also, catamarans and other ferry services operating along the Brisbane River, making stops at several CBD wharves.
Practically every suburb has its own shopping precinct or at the least, one that can be accessed in a matter of minutes by foot. Shopping facilities in the area include Queen Street Mall, Macarthur Central, Myer Centre, Kelvin Grove Urban Village, and Princess Plaza just to name a few.
There’s no shortage of entertainment and recreational facilities in the area. Paddington is known for its restaurants, cafes, bars and night clubs, particularly those located along Given Terrace. The Paddington Tavern, or “Paddo” as it is colloquially referred to, plays to the Sit Down Comedy Club – one of Australia’s premiere comedy acts which has included the likes of Carl Barron, Dave Hughes, Eric Bana, Kitty Flanagan and other prominent acts in comedy. A couple of major sporting arenas are also conveniently just minutes away from the residential areas. Suncorp Stadium, also known as Brisbane Stadium, is a top-tier facility that is the venue for some of Australia’s sporting events and has the capacity of 52,500. Formerly known as Lang Park, the stadium is home to a number of teams including the Queensland Reds of the Australian Rugby Union and Brisbane Roar of the Hyundai A-League. In addition, “The Cauldron” has also hosted the 2008 Rugby League World Cup Final where the Kiwis scored the upset on tournament favourites, the Wallabies.
Plenty of academic institutions are situated in the area. Petrie Terrace, Spring Hill and Paddington have a host of primary and secondary schools, while tertiary institutions can be found within the CBD.
