Who doesn’t want beachside living, within 15km of the city, at affordable prices? Glenelg in South Australia offers all of that and more. With the average price of a three bedroom house at $640,000 to purchase or $470 per week to rent, or an average price of $416,000 for a two bedroom unit (average of $350 per week to rent), Glenelg is a suburb for those who want access to everything. The current population is mostly made up of couples and singles, with few schools in the suburb for families.
As the site of South Australia’s first mainland settlement in 1836, by 1857 the first jetty was being constructed, used by fishermen and accepting cargo from ships including a mail service. The original lighthouse was built in 1872 (a year later it caught fire and was pushed into the sea to save the rest of the jetty). Other additions to this structure included public baths, an aquarium, a police shed and a three-story kiosk/tea rooms. Unfortunately, the entire jetty was destroyed by a cyclone in 1948. The new jetty was planned in the same year and was completed in 1969. This jetty still stands today. Glenelg also includes the Bay Discovery Centre, a free entry museum about Glenelg’s history.
The local council provide a number of services in the area including libraries, reserves, playgrounds, art exhibitions and performances, youth services and group health and fitness options. There are also football, cricket, surf life saving, bowls, croquet and baseball clubs available to join to name a few.
Glenelg can become very touristy especially during the summer months. With visitors being able to spot and swim with dolphins, stay right on the beach but still have easy access to the city, and enjoy the restaurants and cafes, this may not be the spot for you if you want quiet beachside living. However, if you are looking to have the best of both worlds with an easy daily commute and coming home to the beach, the affordable Glenelg may be for you.
