Elizabeth is situated in the outer northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. It was once formally known as City of Elizabeth, which was established by the South Australian Housing Trust in 1955 as part of a planned satellite town targeted towards the influx of English migrants. The suburb is presently the seat of the Playford local government area and acts as a central business district for the surrounding suburbs.
Parks, reserves, playgrounds, library, and leisure facilities are all available in Elizabeth. Dauntsey Reserve is located between Winterslow Road and Woodford Road while Ridley Reserve is on the suburb’s southern boundary. Aquadome, a key recreational facility, provides a variety of recreational activities and features an upgraded 50m pool, a 25m and leisure pool with beach entry and water features, new 110m waterslide, spa, steam room, gymnasium, group fitness room, crèche and café. Elizabeth is well known for its shopping centre — Elizabeth Shopping Centre is the third biggest regional shopping centre in Adelaide. Located right behind Westfield Tea Tree Plaza and the Westfield Marion, it houses Target, Big W, Woolworths, Coles a Reading Cinemas 8-screen complex, a 600-seat international food court and almost 200 boutiques & specialty stores. Food places and cafes are also scattered around the centre including Coffee Club, Baker’s Delight, 42nd Street Café, and Billy Baxter’s Café.
The suburb has a good range of medical centres and Lyle McEwin Hospital is also nearby. A 257-bed acute care teaching hospital, it provides a full range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, emergency and support services in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. The hospital is affiliated with the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.
There are a number of schools in this suburb to choose from. Elizabeth South Primary School was the first school established in Elizabeth. Alternatively, Elizabeth Grove School services include childcare, pre-school, junior primary and primary school. There’s also Elizabeth Vale Primary School, Elizabeth High School, Fremont-Elizabeth City High School, and Kaurna Plains School which is an Aboriginal school that caters predominantly for Aboriginal students. If you havea child wiyj intellectual disability or severe/multiple disability, Elizabeth Special School has programs such as sensory communication and language development programs, plus a range of specialized programs. Additionally, the suburb is also home to TAFE SA which offers training programs such as automotive, information technology, community food services, children’s services, engineering, metal fabrication, hair and beauty, and women’s education.
Elizabeth is also dotted with a vast range of restaurants, cafes, pubs and takeaway shop. Red Chilli Asian Food Bar serves amazing laksa. Make sure not to miss the salt and pepper squid or their Thai green curry on your visit. Just about 24 kilometres from Adelaide, the CBD can be accessed easily by frequent trains and buses. Elizabeth Railway Station is on the Gawler railway line on the border of the northern suburbs of Elizabeth and Edinburgh. There is also a bus service managed by the Adelaide Metro which runs through and around the suburb. Or if you’re driving, Elizabeth Way is the major artery road that runs through the suburb providing access to the main entrances of the shopping centre, while Philip Highway allows access to other areas linking to Main North Road and Salisbury.
